How Long Does a First Aid Certificate Last?

Quick facts:

  • First Aid certificates do not have an expiration date in NSW
  • For HLTAID009 Provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, It is recommended that a refresher for this course be taken at least annually
  • For HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, It is recommended that a CPR refresher is taken annually and Provide First Aid is taken at least every 3 years
  • For HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting, It is recommended that a CPR refresher is taken annually and Provide First Aid is taken at least every 3 years

First Aid certificates do not have an expiration date in NSW. 

However, it is recommended by SafeWork Australia that your First Aid certificate be renewed every 3 years.

Further, depending on your employment and the specific course you’ve done, more frequent renewal may be required.

First Aid Courses

HLTAID009 Provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

The HLTAID009 Provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation is a new unit and replaces the old HLTAID001 Provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation unit. 

It provides participants with the skills and knowledge to assist in a cardiac arrest situation in which CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) is required. It covers all aspects of basic resuscitation as well as the use of defibrillators in the public setting.

It is recommended that a refresher for this course be taken at least annually.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

The HLTAID0011 Provide First Aid unit (which includes HLTAID009 Provide Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) provides participants with the skills and knowledge to assist in almost any emergency situation involving first aid.

It is recommended that a CPR refresher is taken annually and Provide First Aid is taken at least every 3 years for this course.

HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting

This unit replaces the old HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting.

The HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting, covers all the aspects of the Provide First Aid course as well as provides additional training, especially in areas of asthma and anaphylaxis specific to the childcare industry. This unit is specifically designed for those actively working in the childcare industry, such as teachers and childcare workers.

It is recommended by ACECQA that a CPR refresher is taken annually and Provide First Aid is taken at least every 3 years for this course.
